Antony shares his thoughts two years into the job as Burnley and Padiham's Member of Parliament:
Today marks the day, two years on from the 2019 General Election, when I found out I'd been given the privilege of representing Burnley and Padiham in Parliament.
That day was such a life-changing moment - with a real opportunity to deliver positive change for our borough. And over the past two years, that’s exactly what I’ve been focused on.
So much has happened, not least a global pandemic, but I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and am just as grateful and proud to have been elected, today, as I was back in Dec 2019.
In the two years I’ve been your MP I’ve:
Given Burnley and Padiham a voice in Parliament
Delivered Brexit, including introducing a points-based immigration system.
Championed safer streets by increasing the number of front-line police officers. And introducing tougher sentences for the worst offenders.
Spoken up for those facing domestic abuse by bringing in new laws to clamp down on perpetrators.
Made myself the most visible and accessible MP, conducting surgeries all across the borough.
Responded to well over ten thousand emails from residents who needed assistance or wanted to ask me questions.
Protected local businesses from the worst of Covid by making sure they received the necessary financial support to weather the storm.
Focused on jobs as we move towards a high wage, high skill local economy.
Immersed myself within the business community, championing them not just locally but nationally.
Supported the NHS at every turn, giving them the funding they require to deliver the best possible care, with an increased budget of more than £60 billion, and £12 billion extra each year to reduce the backlogs caused by the pandemic.
Stood up for our veterans at every opportunity.
Campaigned for apprenticeships to give the next generation the skills they need to fulfil their potential.
Worked with Burnley College, and all of our schools, to make sure they have what they need to give our young people a world-class education. Including boosting their funding to the highest level in a decade.
And last but not least - Secured £20 million from the Levelling Up Fund for our borough, bringing government investment to our area – making sure we are no longer forgotten.
This anniversary gives me another chance to say a big thank you to the people across Burnley and Padiham for their continued support.
Because whilst I know we're in some tough times I want everybody to know that I wake up every day to try and make our area the best it can be.
